I am urging you to sign House Bill 1642 into law and protect Hawaii consumers especially kupuna from losing their life savings to scams involving cryptocurrency kiosks/ATMS.
The Legislature passed House Bill 1642 to fight fraud by banning deposits into cryptocurrency kiosks/ATMs. People who want to use these machines can still withdraw cash from their cryptocurrency accounts.
Cryptocurrency kiosks, also known as “Bitcoin ATMs,” look like bank ATMs, and are found in supermarkets, convenience stores, gas stations, and pharmacies throughout the state.
These machines are fast becoming the method of choice for fraudsters to collect money stolen from consumers. The FBI reports that in 2025 Hawai’i residents lost nearly $3.85 million through fraud involving cryptocurrency kiosks. That’s nearly four times the amount reported lost in 2024. Without a law to protect consumers, our residents will lose even more money this year.
Please sign this bill and protect Hawaii’s consumers, especially kupuna. We literarily can’t afford to wait another year for a bill to become law.
