As often happens in the ever-changing world of politics, the conversation has shifted a bit from not only discussing Social Security reforms, but also drastically altering Medicare and its respective benefits.  But rest assured, AARP is fighting to protect Medicare and Social Security for Hoosier seniors and strengthen them for future generations at a time when there is much debate about entitlement reform as it relates to the Federal deficit. Unfortunately, there are proposals currently being considered in Washington that would cap mandatory spending across-the-board. This would very likely trigger cuts to Medicare and Social Security benefits.  We need to stop such budget measures, and make sure these ideas aren’t included in legislation regarding raising the debt ceiling.

Our nation’s deficit problem certainly needs to be addressed.  And, that will entail Congress making some tough decisions. But they should be responsible decisions.  They shouldn’t hurt seniors.  AARP strongly believes that people should be able to count on the benefits they have earned, and to be protected from an old age of misery and deprivation after a lifetime of paying their dues.
