Vote YES on Anti-Fraud Legislation
A recent AARP survey found that nine in ten Americans encountered a fraud attempt in the past year and at least one in six of them lost money as a result. One out of five older adults are victims of financial exploitation, and the average victim loses $120,000. The impact on victims and families is wide-reaching and can be both financially and emotionally devastating, especially for older adults.
AARP Oklahoma is fighting to help our residents and their families stay safe by asking Gov. Stitt to sign SB 1083 into law. The bill would increase consumer protections and regulation of digital asset kiosks, also known as bitcoin or cryptocurrency ATMs.
Criminals love these kiosks because they’re a quick way to trick people into handing over cash. They’ll call or text you, pretending to be the government or a company, saying something urgent like, “Your account has been hacked - send money to protect it.” Then they send you to a kiosk with a QR code that funnels your money straight to them. Once it’s gone, it’s nearly impossible to trace or get back.
Oklahomans lost $37,752,198 to cryptocurrency scams, including crypto kiosk fraud, in 2024 - a nearly 51 percent increase from 2023 losses.
That’s why AARP Oklahoma is calling on Gov. Stitt to support important legislation that will help protect older Oklahomans from criminals who misuse cryptocurrency ATMs to steal the money they’ve worked so hard to accumulate for retirement.
