Tell your lawmaker to support family caregivers
AARP Hawai’i is fighting to bring some financial relief for Hawai’i’s family caregivers who pay for expensive care out of their own pockets to help kupuna live independently in their homes.
Without family caregivers, many kupuna would be forced into costly nursing homes with the government and taxpayers footing the bill. It’s time for commonsense solutions that support these unpaid family caregivers who help save Hawai’i taxpayers millions.
The good news: Hawai’i lawmakers have introduced legislation to do just that.
AARP Hawai‘i supports a $3,000 tax credit to alleviate the financial burden on family caregivers. Caregivers spend more $7,200 annually out of their own pockets to care for a loved one at home. Eligible expenses include adult day care, private home care, and home modifications for accessibility. Care recipients must live in the community and not in a nursing home, assisted living or residential care home. Tax credits would benefit eligible taxpayers with annual income less than $75,000 for individual filers, and $125,000 or less for joint filers.
We’re counting on lawmakers to support these unpaid family caregivers.
