Support Property Tax Relief for Michiganders

Advocate for Tax Relief Today!

Rising housing costs and inflation have hit Michigan families hard— especially older adults with low or moderate incomes. In fact, according to a recent AARP study, 82% of adults 45 and older are concerned that increasing property taxes would impact their ability to remain in their home as they age.

A new bipartisan bill package would provide relief by expanding the Homestead Property Tax Credit, and we need your help to encourage lawmakers to pass it!

Senate Bills 344 and 345 would increase the Homestead Property Tax Credit (HPTC) and expand eligibility so more homeowners and renters, especially older adults, will be able to access it. These bills would provide meaningful, targeted relief by modernizing the HPTC to reflect today’s economic challenges. The proposed changes would:

  • Raise the property value cap from $135,000 to $160,700.

  • Increase the income limit for single filers to $70,700 and create a new joint filer cap at $141,400.

  • Expand income eligibility for older adults and add a new threshold for joint filers.

  • Tie income thresholds to inflation using the Consumer Price Index, so the credit keeps pace with costs.

  • Ensure renters can count more of their housing costs when determining their credit.

These bipartisan bills would improve access to homeownership and provide much needed relief for rising property tax credit costs for both homeowners and renters.

Please join us in support of these bills by urging your legislators to vote YES on SB 344 and 345. You can use the form below to email them right now.

Please support SB 344-345 to expand the Homestead Property Tax Credit
Dear Legislator,

As your constituent, I urge you to support Senate Bills 344 and 345, a bipartisan effort to expand and strengthen Michigan’s Homestead Property Tax Credit (HPTC).

Across our state, too many residents—especially older adults and those with fixed or modest incomes—are being squeezed by the rising cost of housing. In fact, a recent AARP study found that 82% of adults aged 45 and older are concerned that property tax increases could force them out of their homes. That’s a reality no one should have to face.

These bills would provide meaningful, targeted relief by modernizing the HPTC to reflect today’s economic challenges. The proposed changes would:

Raise the property value cap from $135,000 to $160,700.

Increase the income limit for single filers to $70,700 and create a new joint filer cap at $141,400.

Tie income thresholds to inflation using the Consumer Price Index, so the credit keeps pace with costs.

Expand eligibility for older adults, including joint filers.

Ensure renters can count more of their housing costs when determining their credit.

These updates would help thousands of Michiganders—particularly older residents—stay in their homes, maintain stability, and age in the communities they know and love. And importantly, this relief comes without cutting into local services or budgets.

SB 344 and 345 are smart, compassionate policies that respond to the real financial pressures people are facing every day. I urge you to support them and help make Michigan a place where all residents—at every stage of life—can live with dignity and security.

Thank you for your service and your commitment to our communities.

Sincerely,
