NJ Legislators: I can't afford a higher electric bill

Vote NO on A6154

New Jerseyans are already facing higher electric bills – and many are cutting back on groceries, heating, and other essentials just to get by. Yet legislation moving in the Assembly and Senate would make the problem worse.

A6154 and S4876 would add $22–$55 per month to customers’ electric bills to subsidize advanced nuclear power projects. These charges would begin long before any electricity is produced, shifting financial risk from developers onto regular people – including older adults.

There is no guarantee these projects will ever be completed. There is no guarantee they will lower bills. But customers would be locked into paying higher charges regardless of the outcome.

Independent experts have raised serious concerns. The New Jersey Division of Rate Counsel warned that this proposal exposes customers to open-ended costs, construction overruns, and years of payments for power that may never come online. Their testimony makes clear that this approach undermines affordability and lacks adequate consumer protections.

New Jersey does need a plan to meet future energy needs. But that plan should be transparent, data-driven, and fair – not built on the backs of people already struggling to afford their utility bills.

Tell lawmakers: Reject A6154 and S4876. Protect affordability. Don’t force customers to assume the risk for power they may never get.

Take action and email your legislators today.

Don't Raise My Electric Bill
Dear Decision Maker,

I am writing to urge you to oppose A6154 and S4876.

This bill would raise electric bills by $22–$55 per month to subsidize nuclear developers – with charges beginning years before any electricity is produced. Customers would be forced to assume the financial risk for projects that may never be built and may never save them a dollar.

New Jersey needs a responsible, comprehensive energy plan. But that plan should not be funded by higher bills for customers who are already struggling to make ends meet.

I urge you to stand up for affordability and vote NO on A6154 and S4876.

Sincerely,
