Thanks to advocacy from AARP members and residents like you, Hawaiʻi lawmakers passed anti-fraud legislation to reduce fraud losses through cryptocurrency kiosks/ATMs.

Scammers are increasingly using cryptocurrency kiosks/ATMS to steal money and the bill will make it more difficult to use these machines for scams by banning deposits.

Join AARP Hawai‘i in thanking your elected officials for passing a strong anti-fraud law that protect Hawaiʻi’s kūpuna.

Mahalo for taking meaningful action to protect Hawaiʻi kūpuna.

Cryptocurrency kiosks have rapidly become a preferred tool for scammers to separate kūpuna and other consumers from their money. These machines often resemble bank ATMs and are commonly found in supermarkets, convenience stores, and gas stations across the state. Many people especially kūpuna are unaware of how these kiosks are used in scams or how quickly funds can be lost.

Thank you for supporting and passing House Bill 1642, which bans deposits into cryptocurrency ATMs and kiosks. This important safeguard will help reduce fraud losses and protect vulnerable residents. In 2024 alone, Hawaiʻi consumers reported nearly $1 million in losses tied to cryptocurrency kiosks, and the actual losses are likely much higher.

Your leadership on this measure demonstrates a strong commitment to protecting Hawaiʻi’s kūpuna and strengthening the families who care for them. Thank you for listening to your constituents and for voting in support of this important protection.

Sincerely,
