Vote YES to protect Oklahomans from ID theft
Oklahomans are increasingly being targeted by identity theft schemes that exploit personal data, digital accounts, and financial information.
AARP’s Fraud Watch Network reports that identity theft is the top issue among Oklahomans who contact its Help Line, reflecting a national trend in which adults aged 60 and older lost more than $50 million to identity theft scams in 2024.
HB 3244 by Rep. Steve Bashore and Sen. Chuck Hall strengthens protections in Oklahoma by modernizing identity theft statutes and significantly expanding the types of personal and digital information covered under the law. It creates an aggravated identity theft charge for possessing identifying information from five or more victims and establishes stronger penalties for repeat offenders.
The bill also makes it a crime to recruit, coerce, or deceive elderly adults, minors or vulnerable populations into committing crimes on a criminal's behalf, with even steeper penalties for those with prior exploitation convictions.
The Oklahoma House of Representatives will vote on HB 3244 soon. Make your voice heard today and urge your state representative to vote YES to protect Oklahomans from identity theft.
