Congress: Put money back into the pockets of family caregivers

Right now, 17 million Americans are part of the sandwich generation, simultaneously caring for a child under 18 and an adult family member.

While shouldering the increasing costs of child care, sandwich generation caregivers are often also covering costs for their older loved ones.

There’s a bill in Congress that could ease this financial strain by allowing them to use tax-free flexible spending accounts (FSAs) and health savings accounts (HSAs) to pay for a parent’s or parent-in-law’s medical expenses.

I am one of your constituents, and I’m asking you to put money back into the pockets of family caregivers.

A newly released report from AARP and the National Alliance for Caregiving found that 17 million Americans are part of the sandwich generation, simultaneously caring for a child under 18 and an adult with a disability or complex medical condition.

Not only are they juggling more hours of caregiving and doing more complex care, but they are also strained financially by caring for a child, and an older parent, spouse, or other loved one.

To help these hardworking family caregivers keep more of their own money, I’m asking you to cosponsor the Lowering Costs for Caregivers Act. This would allow family caregivers to use tax-free flexible spending accounts (FSAs) and health savings accounts (HSAs) to pay for a parent’s or parent-in-law’s medical expenses.

Generally, these accounts only cover medical expenses for you, your spouse, or tax-dependent children.  The Lowering Costs for Caregivers Act would expand eligibility to parents and parents-in-law. As your constituent, I ask that you standup for family caregivers and cosponsor the Lowering Costs for Caregivers Act.
