Let Medicare negotiate lower Rx prices

As your constituent, I’m asking you to address skyrocketing Rx prices and give Medicare the right to negotiate lower prices in the Build Back Better proposal.

Prescription drug prices keep going up year after year—often at more than twice the rate of inflation—even for medications that have been on the market for decades. Every year the program spends more than $129 billion on prescription medicines. Yet, Medicare is prohibited by law from negotiating lower prices with prescription drug companies. This means U.S. consumers often pay more than three times as much for the same prescription drugs as people in other countries — and taxpayers pay more too. According to a recent analysis, Medicare could have saved $14.4 billion on just 50 drugs in 2016 if the program had paid the same prices as the Department of Veterans Affairs, which IS allowed to negotiate prescription drug prices.

Prescription drug prices keep going up, even for medications that have been on the market for decades. Last year, even in the middle of the pandemic, prescription drug companies increased the price of over 1,000 prescription drugs, including those for chronic conditions that people over age 50 depend on. It’s just wrong.

I urge you to pass the Build Back Better legislation that would allow Medicare to use its enormous buying power to negotiate for lower prescription drug prices. This would save the seniors and taxpayers hundreds of billions of dollars and help lower costs for everyone.
