Reject the Con Edison Rate Hike!

Con Edison’s revenue requests - the largest in New York State history - come at a time of spikes in utility bills and high inflation, when many of their customers are already struggling just to pay their current bills. Currently, nearly 400,000 Con Edison customers are at least two months behind on their utility bills. The requested 18% electric and 28% natural gas delivery rate increases Con Edison is seeking should be rejected by the Public Service Commission.

Please send a comment to the New York State Public Service Commission urging them to reject the spending request and bring the rate increase down to a more manageable level.

I urge the Public Service Commission to reject Con Edison’s enormous rate hike requests.

Con Edison’s proposed 18% electric and 28% natural gas delivery rate increases come on the heels of record utility bills and record inflation that are already hurting New Yorkers financially. Given that Con Ed’s rates are among the highest in the country, it is important to also point out and acknowledge how Con Ed’s customers are doing financially. The Company’s own collections activity reports show that over 400,000 customers—about 13% of all their customers—are behind on their bills by 60 days or more. This request of an additional $1.7 billion in revenues is almost three times the size of Con Ed’s $695 million 2019 request and $636 million 2016 request. Is this really the time for Con Edison to be proposing the largest utility rate hike in New York State history?

In addition, the monthly customer charge for both electric and natural gas service is already too high and should not be increased. High customer charges make it difficult for ratepayers like me to manage the energy bills and, contrary to state policy, discourage rather than encourage energy conservation.

I strongly urge the Public Service Commission to stand up for struggling utility consumers like me and reject Con Edison's rate hike request. Rapidly rising utility bills are not sustainable and will just result in even more customers behind on their bills and facing potential service termination.
