Congress: Fix Social Security's customer service!

Social Security service is a big problem: Calls go unanswered, seniors can't get the information or services they need, and an average of 10,000 people a year die waiting for a decision.

It's outrageous. We contribute to Social Security with every paycheck, and we expect it to be responsive to us on the benefits and services we have earned and need. The current service issues are unacceptable.

Tell your member of Congress to give the Social Security Administration the resources it needs.

As your constituent and an AARP member, I ask that you properly fund the Social Security Administration's customer services so all Americans can receive timely and accurate support.

Right now, call wait times average 34 minutes. Last year, the Social Security Administration's Inspector General reported that almost half of the 151 million calls to the national 1-800 number and field offices went unanswered. This has to change.

In addition, the monthly average time to process a disability initial claim has grown to 204 days, and more than 10,000 people a year die waiting for a disability decision. Half of these individuals would have received an award, depriving them and their family of benefits when they needed it most. It's unacceptable.

The Social Security Administration says they are at their lowest staffing level in 25 years, and that affects the nearly 68 million Americans served by this system. Older Americans, those with disabilities, and their families deserve prompt service, but instead are frustrated by shortfalls at the agency.

Please, prioritize fixing these issues by giving the Social Security Administration the resources it needs.
