Let Medicare negotiate lower Rx prices

Tell Congress: Stop unfair drug prices now.

It’s outrageous: Americans pay more than THREE times what people in other countries pay for the same medicine — yet Medicare isn’t allowed to use its enormous buying power to negotiate drug prices. That’s a sweetheart deal for Big Pharma, who makes billions in profits off of seniors and taxpayers.

It’s time for Congress to fix this and allow Medicare to negotiate for lower prescription drug prices, which would save the program hundreds of billions of dollars and help lower costs for everyone. Tell Congress: Stop unfair drug prices now.

As your constituent and an AARP member, I’m asking you to pass legislation that allows Medicare to negotiate for lower prescription drug prices.

Prescription drug spending is one of the fastest-growing components of Medicare. Every year the program spends more than $129 billion on prescription medicines. Yet, Medicare is prohibited by law from negotiating lower prices with drug companies. This means U.S. consumers often pay more than three times as much for the same prescription drugs as people in other countries — and taxpayers pay more too. According to a recent analysis, Medicare could have saved $14.4 billion on just 50 drugs in 2016 if the program had paid the same prices as the Department of Veterans Affairs, which IS allowed to negotiate drug prices.

Drug prices keep going up, even for medications that have been on the market for decades. Last year, even in the middle of the pandemic, drug companies increased the price of over 1,000 drugs, including those for chronic conditions that people over age 50 depend on. It’s just wrong.

I urge you to work with other members of Congress and pass legislation that would allow Medicare to use its enormous buying power to negotiate for lower prescription drug prices. This would save the program hundreds of billions of dollars and help lower costs for everyone.
