Lawmakers: Protect Americans from fraud

Too many Americans are affected by fraud every day. Scammers can drain life savings and cause lasting emotional harm. And they hit people 50-plus the hardest.

Fraud is growing at an alarming rate, with criminals stealing nearly $200 billion from Americans last year alone. Older Americans are often targeted, losing hard-earned savings to increasingly sophisticated scams.
 
As your constituent, I urge you to take action to protect older Americans from fraud and financial exploitation. Congress should pass bills to:

— Stop taxing victims on money criminals stole. Too many fraud victims have their savings stolen and learn they owe taxes on that money because it came out of a tax advantaged account. Congress should pass legislation such as the Tax Relief for Victims of Crimes, Scams, and Disasters Act (S. 1773/H.R. 3469) and the Tax Relief for Fraud Victims Act (H.R. 9500) to ensure victims are not penalized a second time.
—  Give law enforcement better tools to fight fraud. State and local law enforcement agencies are often the first place victims reach out and unfortunately, they are overwhelmed by the volume and complexity of today's scams. Congress should advance legislation such as the GUARD Act (S. 2544/H.R. 2978) and the STOP Scams Against Seniors Act (H.R. 6426) to help law enforcement hire personnel, train investigators, and obtain the tools needed to combat financial crimes and strengthen cooperation among federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies to better protect older Americans.

Fraud is on the rise, growing 43% last year according to the FBI. Something must be done. There are many bipartisan proposals before Congress that would help prevent fraud, support victims, and hold criminals accountable. Please make protecting older Americans from fraud and scams a priority.
