Support These Bills
AARP is committed to making aging easier in Massachusetts. With a new legislative year just getting underway, we have filled three bills that, if passed, will make a positive impact for all Bay Staters.
Supporting Family Caregivers HD3456/SD1509 (Click Here to Read the Bill)
There are 780,000 people in our state who take care of a family member every day. These people are the backbone of our long-term care system and without them the system would collapse. This bill is a comprehensive approach to providing support for caregivers and the family members they care for. It has a lot of great provisions: such as a state income tax credit for caregivers, a respite voucher program so that caregivers can get a break, antidiscrimination protections in the workplace for caregivers, unemployment insurance eligibility for caregivers if they need to leave the workforce, finally allowing spouses to be paid as caregivers through Medicaid, and more.
Fighting Fraud and Protecting Consumers HD935/SD968 (Click Here to Read the Bill)
Fraud and scams have become an everyday occurrence in America. Many older Bay Staters have lost their life savings to criminals taking advantage of them. The best way to stop these crimes is to be aware of them and avoid them. But for the people who get caught up in them, we have to do something. This bill addresses the newest and fastest growing way scammers are getting money from victims, Bitcoin ATMs. You may have seen them at your gas station or grocery store. These might look like regular ATMs but instead of taking money out, scammers have victims put cash in and convert it to Bitcoin to be send to their untraceable cryptocurrency wallets oversees. This legislation would create new regulations on these machines that will save real people real money.
Pedestrian Safety and More Livable Communities (HD1806/SD2015)
People want to age in their homes and communities, every survey or poll we conduct tells us so. We must do more to ensure all our communities are safe, accessible, and livable for people of all ages. One thing more older residents are giving up is driving. Whether they have to because of health or just want to cut down on costs, we know that more older people are walking as their primary mode of transportation. Even if that's not your case, we all are pedestrians at some point. This bill would make it so that every city and town in the Commonwealth knows where residents who need more time to cross the street are most often traveling and can ensure they have enough time to safely cross the streets.
