Congress: Update Medicare to cover dental care

Right now, Congress is looking at a proposal to update Medicare to include dental, vision, and hearing — closing a big gap in coverage. But deep-pocketed special interest groups are pushing back to remove dental and other coverage from this proposal, and we need to speak up now.

I am an AARP member, a voter, and your constituent. I am asking you to support adding dental, hearing, and vision coverage under Medicare.

Medicare should cover a person’s total health. This coverage will improve health outcomes and reduce costs down the line.

Dental care has direct links to the overall health and quality of life. Oral health is directly tied to nutrition and social isolation. Lack of oral care can make chronic conditions worse.

Medicare should be updated so older people can afford to be proactive across all areas that affect their health. Right now, coverage for dental care is a significant kitchen table budget issue for Medicare beneficiaries, particularly those with chronic conditions like diabetes and heart disease. Out of the Medicare beneficiaries who used dental services this year, nearly 1 in 5 spent more than $1,000 out-of-pocket. And overall health care savings have increased when dental coverage is provided for patients with diabetes, heart disease, and stroke.

Including dental, vision, and hearing coverage under Medicare is necessary to ensure all older Americans have access to the care they need.
