Urge Governor Moore to sign SB 1!
We all get those calls and mailers. Or you get the knock on the door. Retail energy suppliers are everywhere. They are selling in malls, at big box stores, and even outside the Department of Social Services, touting low-cost clean energy. They promise to reduce your gas and electric bill, often sweetening the pitch with a gift card or airline miles. And yet, too often, third-party retail energy suppliers rely on predatory sales tactics to lure people into signing a contract and after a month, the rate is variable which often costs more than if you stayed with the regulated utility.
Thankfully, Senator Augustine and Delegate Crosby have introduced SB 1 Electricity and Gas – Retail Supply – Regulation and Consumer Protection. The legislation reins in unscrupulous sales tactics.
The bill provides price protections to ensure retail energy supply is affordable. It also imposes new standards for “clean energy” marketing and offers and expands the Maryland Public Service Commission oversight.
You have asked your lawmakers to support SB1 and you have asked Governor Moore to sign SB 1. Now the industry is ramping up their lobbying to urge Governor Moore to veto SB 1. If Governor Moore vetoes SB 1, there would be little to no consumer protections when you are deciding who your energy supplier should be. Can you spare another minute to tell him to support this legislation? A personal email from you could make the difference between this bill going into law or not. Thank you in advance for choosing to be the difference!
