As health care costs continue to skyrocket, older New Yorkers find it increasingly difficult to pay their bills. Consumers are increasingly draining their savings accounts and resorting to new lines of credit to pay for treatment. Even with Medicare, Medicaid, and private insurance, older adults are often saddled with exorbitant out-of-pocket medical expenses.
Fortunately, two bills that can help patients struggling with medical costs recently passed the state Legislature. Now we need Governor Hochul to sign them into law.
State bill S.6522-A / A.7363-A would protect patients from wage garnishment or having liens placed on their primary residence due to medical debt, and state bill S.2521-C / A.3470-C makes preventative care more affordable and requires transparency in the billing of facility fees.
Please urge Governor Hochul to sign S.6522-A (Rivera) / A.7363-A (Gottfried) and S.2521-C (Rivera) / A.3470-C (Gottfried) into law.
