Reject the Con Edison Rate Hike!

Con Edison wants to raise rates by another $2 billion – increasing the average monthly electric and gas bill by about $60. At a time when many New Yorkers are already struggling, this is unacceptable.

Con Edison’s proposed electric and natural gas rate increases come on the heels of record high utility bills, driven by their last huge rate hike that is already hurting New Yorkers financially. Con Ed’s rates are among the highest in the country, and hundreds of thousands of customers are already behind on their utility bills. How many more Con Ed customers need to fall behind on their utility bills before it’s clear to the Public Service Commission that we simply cannot afford another massive hike? Spreading out the increase over three years and giving the utility more than they actually asked for, like what happened last time, does little to ease the burden on consumers like me. In the end, the rates are still sky high. The Commission should not approve such a crushing increase on consumers.

Additionally, the monthly customer charge for both electric and natural gas service is already too high and should be decreased. High fixed customer charges make it difficult for ratepayers to manage our energy bills.

I strongly urge the Public Service Commission to stand up for struggling utility consumers like me and reject Con Edison's rate hike request. Rapidly rising utility bills are not sustainable and will result in even more customers falling behind on their bills and facing potential service termination.
