Tell NJ Lawmakers: Support Older Workers through the Earned Income Tax Credit!

The New Jersey Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) is a refundable tax credit for low- to moderate-income working individuals and couples. The NJ EITC lifts thousands out of poverty. These dollars are spent in local communities, growing our economy for everyone.

However, this tax credit is not available to workers over the age of 64.

It is time to end this discrimination against older workers. Governor Murphy has proposed eliminating the NJ EITC’s age cap as part of the state budget process. It is now time for the NJ Legislature to act!

Older Americans are the fastest growing segment of the workforce. COVID-19’s health and fiscal crises has severely affected thousands. Many want or need to work longer. Moreover, New Jersey’s EITC requirements are not in step with current Social Security rules. Full Social Security retirement benefits are available at age 66 – increasing to 67 if your birthdate is after 1960.

The NJ EITC should be available to workers of all ages. Let’s eliminate the age cap now!

Support Older Workers through the Earned Income Tax Credit
Dear Decision Maker,

I urge you to support New Jersey's low- and moderate-income older workers by eliminating the NJ Earned Income Tax Credit's (EITC) outdated age cap to reflect the realities of today's aging workforce and improve the financial security of older workers.

The need for this change is even more critical as many older workers are suffering great financial harm during the COVID-19 pandemic and will likely have to work well past the age of 64, having lost jobs and savings during this crisis.

All low- and moderate-income workers should benefit from the NJ EITC, regardless of age. Moreover, EITC requirements are not in step with current Social Security rules. Full Social Security retirement benefits are not available until age 66 increasing to 67 if your birth date is after 1960.

Workers who receive this tax credit use the funds to make ends meet and spend these dollars in their local communities to pay for housing, food, medicine and utilities.

It is time to modernize NJ's Earned Income Tax Credit program to support older workers. Support the elimination of the age cap for the EITC in the FY2022 budget.

Sincerely,
