We appreciate your response, but we have to disagree. There are only a handful of ways for Americans to get answers on the Social Security we’ve earned. To make matters worse, the Social Security Administration will soon cut certain phone services. The AARP community is fighting to reverse this new proposed change which could make it harder for many people, especially those living in rural areas or who have mobility challenges, to get the services they need for the money they’ve earned.

I am one of your constituents and an AARP member. Please work to reverse the new cuts to certain Social Security phone services.

We earn Social Security throughout a lifetime of hard work. That money is ours and we deserve proper customer service.

The Social Security Administration (SSA) will soon require that some transactions that were handled over the phone now need new, burdensome identity verification. This sudden change was made with no public input or adequate notice. It forces Americans to wait on hold for hours, make appointments, or take time off work simply to access the Social Security they earned. The SSA is already struggling with long hold times, low staffing, delayed callbacks, and confusion around possible office closures. This is unacceptable.

Phone services are a critical lifeline, especially for rural Americans, people with mobility issues, and people who don't have reliable transportation. Limiting or eliminating phone-based support cuts off one of the few remaining ways to get the help they need from SSA.

This chaotic rollout could also invite criminals to exploit confusion around identity verification.

I’m urging you to use your power to reverse the proposed change that is inefficient and creates more confusion for older Americans.
