Since the pandemic started, things have only gotten worse, and the unemployment toll for older workers is the worst it has been in half a century.

As your constituent, I am counting on you to level the playing field and ensure that older workers can be treated fairly based on their abilities -- not their age. That's why I am urging you to pass S397.

Older workers are a critical part of our workforce, and workers aged 65 and older are the fastest-growing labor pool. Yet, New Jersey still allows employers not to hire or promote workers over 70 years old simply due to their age.

There is no time to waste age discrimination threatens the financial security of older workers. Before the pandemic hit, research found that more than half of older workers were pushed out of longtime jobs prematurely, and 90% of these workers never go on to earn as much, if they are lucky enough to get another job at all. And now, the unemployment toll for older workers is the worst it has been in half a century, with workers age 55 and older 17% more likely to lose their jobs than employees who were just a few years younger.

S397 would eliminate the language in the current law that allows employers to refuse to hire or promote workers over age 70.

This commonsense bill is essential to protecting the rights and well-being of older workers and their families. As one of your constituents, I am counting on you to be a champion for older workers and pass S397 now.
