The Ohio Senate last week revealed their version of the budget, and there are a number of issues that negatively impact Ohioan’s 50-plus population. The Senate is at work reviewing amendments, and we need them to include funding for Healthy Aging Grants, remove changes for SNAP eligibility, and provide accountability and transparency in nursing homes.

Your legislator needs to hear from you on these issues. Tell them to include measures that will protect the safety and security of Ohioans 50-plus and offer quality care in nursing homes.

I’m your constituent, and I’m asking you to take action that will protect and support Ohio’s 50-plus population.

Please accept the amendments to the state budget that will offer safety and security of Ohioans 50-plus and help reduce their financial burden.

• Restore funding for the Healthy Aging Grants at $40 million. Aging in place is extremely important to a majority of Ohio residents age 45+, and they’re concerned they will not be able to afford to age in their home. The Healthy Aging Grants program would provide an option for many to do so.

• Eliminate changes for SNAP eligibility that create unrealistic work and asset eligibility barriers for Ohioans age 50+ who are on a fixed income and facing rising inflation, higher utilities, food and housing costs. SNAP is an especially important program for older Americans because many face challenges to employment, live on fixed incomes, live alone, and have limited financial resources to spend on necessities like food, housing, and essential medicine. The proposal to expand work, education and training requirements would restrict access to SNAP more for older Ohioans, because they typically take longer to find work than younger adults. Older Ohioans living on meager fixed incomes and limited budgets should not have to sell small assets, like a used car, to maintain their food benefits.

• Require all Ohio-licensed nursing homes to provide annual, audited financial statements. Nursing homes should demonstrate how much revenue spending is going towards direct resident care, which ultimately improves quality of care for your loved ones.

I ask you to ensure resources are focused on supporting older Ohioans so they can thrive throughout the state.
