AARP believes that public employee defined benefit plans are not only critical for providing public employees with the financial security in retirement that they have earned but are also important for recruiting and retaining the best employees to provide effective services to taxpayers.

On March 23, the Senate State and Local Government Committee gave HB 1040 - the bill we oppose - a DO NOT PASS recommendation by a vote of 4-2.

Defined benefit pension plans, like those offered in North Dakota, provide a critical source of retirement income that thousands of North Dakota’s workers and retirees depend on for their financial security. Moreover, pensions help reduce reliance on public assistance programs and have a significant and positive impact in the state and local economies in which they are spent.

Ensuring the pension is strong and sound should be the focus of the ND legislature in order to help these older North Dakotans to live independently as they age.
