On December 3, 2014 –
the Illinois General Assembly passed Senate Bill 2758 – the Illinois Secure
Choice Savings Program. The bill was signed into law by Governor Pat Quinn on January 4, 2015. Now, over 2
million Illinoisans who do not currently have access to a retirement savings
plan at work will be able to save for their futures through an employment-based
Individual Retirement Account (IRA).
The Illinois Secure
Choice Savings Program provides small businesses (with 25 or more employees
that have been in business over two years) the ability to provide a basic
retirement savings option for their employees without having to sponsor a plan.
Through voluntary retirement accounts, the program promotes self-reliance
and empowers workers to save for their own retirement. Small businesses
also gain a competitive edge in the hiring marketplace by being able to offer a
retirement plan to prospective employees.
