Pay Equity is Important for ALL of US
S992, which passed with bi-partisan
support and only awaits the signature of Governor Christie, means women can
better support their families now, and their financial futures later
AARP supports efforts to eliminate all
barriers to women’s employment and ensure equality in employment opportunities,
pay, and benefits. Yet in 2014, female
full-time workers made only 79 cents for every dollar earned by men, a
gender wage gap of 21 percent.
And the gender pay gap is worse for
minority women. In 2012 they earned just 54 percent of the median annual
earnings of white men.
the Garden State are working multiple jobs, while still caring for their own
children, or for older family members. Many are single moms, meaning the entire
financial burden of keeping their households afloat falls squarely on their shoulders.
But with faced with the reality of the numbers above, many women simply
cannot make it.
And if they
can’t meet their financial needs of today, they certainly are not going to be
able to save for their retirement, and ensure a financially secure tomorrow.
That’s why it’s so
important that Governor Christie enact of S992.
