Eliminating Big Sky Rx is bad medicine!

For Montanans over age 65 paying for prescription drugs can be a huge challenge. Medicare helps pay for you to go to the doctor, but what good is that if you can’t afford Medicare Part D drug coverage? For the last 12 years Big Sky Rx has helped over 10,000 low income seniors pay their Part D premium every year. Now because our state budget is in crisis, Big Sky Rx is on the chopping block.

In 2004, voters approved an increase in the tobacco tax by 63%, allocating a portion for prescription drug assistance for seniors. The 2005 legislature overwhelming voted to establish Big Sky Rx. The need for prescription drug assistance has not gone away since then. It makes no sense to eliminate it now.

It’s a sad situation when the solution to our state budget crisis is to make life tougher for people who can’t afford medicine. Montana can do better. Please urge legislators and the governor to come together to find the resources and solutions to the budget crisis without devastating cuts to programs like Big Sky Rx.
