Ask your U.S. Senator to include the tax credit for family caregivers in the tax reform package!
The family caregiver tax credit would create a federal, nonrefundable tax credit of up to $3,000 for family caregivers who work while also helping financially their parents, spouses, children and adults with disabilities or other loved ones. The bipartisan bill was introduced by Sens. Joni Ernst (R-IA) and Michael Bennet(D-CO). AARP has endorsed this legislation.
Why is a tax credit needed?
Family caregivers take on huge responsibilities that can be overwhelming, stressful and exhausting—not to mention challenging financially. Many juggle family caregiving duties while working full- or part-time jobs; some are still raising families.
Nearly 80 percent of family caregivers use their own money to care for loved ones—paying for transportation, home modifications, medications, assistive technology and more.
The family caregiver tax credit is a commonsense step forward to support America’s greatest support system —family caregivers—helping them to be more secure financially and stay in the workforce.
At AARP, supporting family caregivers is a top priority. Join us in urging your U.S. Senator to include the family caregiver tax credit in the final tax reform package.
