Urge your Lawmakers to Pass a Strong 2018 Iowa CARE Act!

Tell your Iowa State Lawmaker to help Iowa’s caregiving families by passing
a strong 2018 Iowa CARE Act (HF 2289), now! Across our state, 317,0000
family caregivers help their older parents, spouses, adults and children with
  disabilities and other
loved ones so they can live independently in their
homes and communities - instead of in costly, taxpayer-funded institutions.
They assist with meal preparation, managing finances, transportation, and
  much more.

Many Iowa family caregivers also perform medical or nursing tasks for
their loved ones – like complex medication management, wound care,
and injections. Yet, most receive little or no training for these important duties.

That’s why AARP Iowa is asking the Iowa state legislature to support caregiving families with a no-cost commonsense bill, the 2018 Iowa CARE Act. The bill seeks to engage and support family caregivers when their older moms, dads, spouses, and other loved ones go into the hospital and as they transition home.

The 2018 Iowa CARE Act includes three commonsense steps:

1. Designate: The family caregiver’s name is recorded when a loved one is admitted to a hospital.
2. Inform: The family caregiver is notified if the loved one is to be discharged to another facility or back home.
3. Instruct: At discharge, the family caregiver is provided with instructions, and a demonstration, of the medical and nursing tasks—like wound care or injections—that they must perform for their loved one at home.

Iowa is one of only 14 states without a similar state law to support caregiving families—and no federal law provides this protection. All Iowa hospitals should have discharge plans that include patients' family caregivers.

Pass a Strong 2018 Iowa CARE Act!

Dear Representative,

Iowa's family caregivers are the first line of defense against older Iowans being forced from their homes and into costly, taxpayer-funded nursing homes or back into the hospital. They take on huge responsibilities that can be overwhelming, stressful, and exhausting to care for their older parents, spouses, adults and children with disabilities and other loved ones. And they need your support now.

That's why I urge you to pass the 2018 Iowa CARE Act (HF 2289)--a no-cost, commonsense bill to support family caregivers when their loved ones go into the hospital and as they transition home.

The 2018 Iowa CARE Act includes three commonsense steps:
1. Designate: The family caregiver's name is recorded when a loved one is admitted to a hospital.
2. Inform: The family caregiver is notified if the loved one is to be discharged to another facility or back home.
3. Instruct: At discharge, the family caregiver is provided with instructions, and a demonstration, of the medical and nursing tasks that they must perform for their loved one at home.

Iowa's family caregivers need help now. Don't let this session end without passing a strong 2018 Iowa CARE Act.

Sincerely,
