Tell your Iowa State Lawmaker to help Iowa’s caregiving families by passing a no-cost commonsense bill, the 2018 Iowa CARE Act (HR 2289/SSB 3123) now. Across our state,317,000 family caregivers help their older parents, spouses, adults and children with disabilities and other loved ones so they can live independently in their homes and communities - instead of in costly, taxpayer-funded institutions. They assist with meal preparation, managing finances, transportation, and much more.
Many Iowa family caregivers also perform medical or nursing tasks for their loved ones – like complex medication management, wound care, and injections. Yet, most receive little or no training for these important duties.
That’s why AARP Iowa is asking the Iowa state legislature to support caregiving families with a no-cost commonsense bill called the 2018 Iowa CARE Act.
The 2018 Iowa CARE Act includes three commonsense steps:
1. Designate: The family caregiver’s name is recorded when a loved one is admitted to a hospital.2. Inform: The family caregiver is notified if the loved one is to be discharged to another facility or back home.3. Instruct: At discharge, the family caregiver is provided with instructions, and a demonstration, of the medical and nursing tasks—like wound care or injections—that they must perform for their loved one at home.
By taking action you will join AARP's online network and will receive urgent news and action alerts about the issues that matter the most to older Americans, as well as information about AARP activities, events, and member benefits.
Dear [Decision Maker],
Iowa's family caregivers are the first line of defense against older Iowans being forced from their homes and into costly, taxpayer-funded nursing homes or back into the hospital. They take on huge responsibilities that can be overwhelming, stressful, and exhausting to care for their older parents, spouses, adults and children with disabilities and other loved ones. And they need your support now. That's why I urge you to support the 2018 Iowa CARE Act (HF 2289/SSB 3123) --a no-cost, commonsense bill to support family caregivers when their loved ones go into the hospital and as they transition home. Iowa is one of only 14 states that do not have a law similar to the 2018 Iowa CARE Act in place for caregiving families.
Iowa's family caregivers need help now. Don't let this session end without passing the 2018 CARE Act.
Sincerely,[Your Name] [Your Address] [City, State ZIP]
