LB306 – Unemployment Good Cause for Caregiving - Senator Sue Crawford What Does LB306 Do?

LB306 provides persons who leave work to care for a family member with a serious health condition eligibility for unemployment benefits.

Why is LB306 Important?

By adding “caregiving for a family member with a serious health condition” to the reasons which are considered “good cause” for leaving employment, we can help to ease the burden shouldered by Nebraskans looking to re-enter the workforce after a period of caregiving.

Caregiving Responsibilities Affect Many Families

Caregiving usually includes taking time off from work to provide hands-on care for an elderly, ailing, or disabled family member, such as help with bathing, eating, and giving medications. One in four middle aged and older workers have been a family caregiver, and that 73% of those family caregivers are employed outside the home.

Working Caregivers Face Significant Challenges

Workers who juggle family caregiver responsibilities often experience significant stress balancing dual responsibilities; indeed, many must also manage care for minor children, while caring for older adults in their families. In 2009, two-thirds of working caregivers surveyed said that their caregiving responsibilities affected their work.
