Right now, state legislators in Harrisburg are considering forcing Pennsylvania’s electricity
customers to pick up the tab for a $500 million per year surcharge to bail out the state’s
The proposed bailout legislation will raise electricity rates for only Pennsylvania customers, even though our nuclear plants provide power to a regional grid that supplies customers in 12 other states. That means Pennsylvania electricity ratepayers would be paying a premium so customers in other states can enjoy discounted electric rates. That’s just not fair.
And then there’s the cost. One estimate sets the price tag of a bailout at $500 million—but it’s important to remember that will be $500 million per year for at least six years-the initial term of the surcharge in the current legislation. That’s putting Pennsylvania ratepayers on the hook for some $3 billion.
bottom line is Pennsylvania electric utility customers should not be forced to
pay higher rates to benefit corporations already making millions in profits. Currently,
four out of five nuclear power generators in Pennsylvania are profitable – and are
projected to make a total profit of more than $600 million this year alone. A bailout is unfair and unecessary.
utility customers expect to pay fair and reasonable prices for electricity –
and not a dollar more. We need our elected leaders to put the interests of
consumers above those of profitable nuclear power providers.
Send a message to your state lawmaker today. Tell them the proposed nuclear bailout plan will do nothing more than enhance the bottom line for nuclear power providers, at the expense of the state’s electricity customers.

Say No to Bailing Out Pennsylvania's Nuclear Power Providers
Dear [Decision Maker],
You and your colleagues in the General Assembly are currently considering saddling Pennsylvania's electricity customers with a $500 million per year surcharge to bail out the state's nuclear industry.
The fact is such a bailout is totally unnecessary. Pennsylvania electric utility customers should not be forced to pay higher rates to benefit corporations already making millions in profits. Four out of five nuclear power generators in Pennsylvania are profitable according to their owners and are projected to make a profit of more than $600 million. What's worse is that the bailout would only apply to Pennsylvania electricity customers, even though the plants provide power to 12 other states. That means our residents would be paying a premium so customers in other states can enjoy discounted electricity rates. That's just not fair.
Pennsylvania utility customers expect to pay fair and reasonable prices for electricity--and not a dollar more. We need you to put the interests of consumers above those of nuclear power providers by not supporting the $500 million annual bailout for Pennsylvania's nuclear power plants.
Sincerely,[Your Name] [Your Address] [City, State ZIP][Your Email]
