New York Consumers Need an Independent Utility Consumer Advocate!
New Yorkers pay some of the highest utility rates in the nation. We need an independent advocate with the expertise and legal standing to represent the interests of residential utility customers when utility companies try to raise rates even higher.
Year after year, utility companies spend around $10 million annually in ratepayer money to engage in complex proceeding before the Public Service Commission in which they ask to raise utility rates in their service territories. Essentially, utility customers are paying utility companies millions of dollars every year to try to raise our rates! This year alone, Con Edison customers in NYC and Westchester County are facing a $1.7 billion rate hike request on electric and gas service, National Grid gas customers on Long Island and NYC are facing a rate hike request in their territory, and there are other utility rate hike requests on file already or expected around the state.
Please take a moment to send a message to your state lawmakers urging them to pass legislation that would give ratepayers a voice in these matters by creating the Office of the Independent Utility Consumer Advocate.
