Ask our State Senator and
Representative to protect older Rhode Islanders against financial exploitation
and also to make home care services more affordable.
survey that we conducted in January showed overwhelming support for legislation
to 1) protect older Rhode Islanders against elder abuse and 2) making home care
services more affordable.
currently bills pending before the House and Senate of the state legislature
that would protect older Rhode Islanders against financial exploitation. In the
Providence Journals special report last fall on elder abuse headlines read
“Guardian Turns Financial Predator” and Gaming the System is Easy for
presently pursuing legislation that could prevent guardianship abuse by
requiring national criminal background checks for all court appointed
we are pushing to pass legislation that would allow for Supported Decision
Making which would allow people with early stage dementia to still be able to
make their own decisions with a little support.
We are also
advocating to keep language in the Governor’s budget that would increase the
threshold for income eligibility in the Department of Elderly Affairs Home Care
Service program. This would make qualifying older Rhode Islanders eligible for
home care at a reduced rate that would be no more than $7.50 an hour as opposed
to the $28-$30 that home care service companies charge.
All of this legislation is currently
pending and we need your help. Please tell your state legislator that you want
protection against financial exploitation and affordable home care services.
