Say No to Blank Checks
The NC House of Representatives is considering Senate Bill
559, which if passed, will raise your electric utility bill for the next five
years and could include a new fixed charge for up to 30 years.
AARP North Carolina is very much opposed to this bill
because it would allow NC Public Electric Utilities to go five years without
regular public hearings and rate and spending reviews by the NC Utilities
Commission. Yes, that’s right five years.
We need to act quickly because the bill has already passed
the Senate without adequate debate. If we don’t raise our concerns, it could
move quickly through the House.
As energy consumers, it makes no sense for us to give up our
ability to make sure that our electric rates are fair and reasonable.
Please let your Representatives know today that five years
of automatic rate increases is too high of a price to pay.
Note: For some legislative districts, the districts are broken up within zip codes. If this is the case, you may need to enter your zip code along with the additional 4 digit code to email your legislator. For example, 27713-4524. No worries. If this is needed, you will receive a message after you hit the submit button and you can then locate this code on your driver's license, your mail or by visiting the "United State Postal Services 4-digit code lookup" webpage here: https://tools.usps.com/go/ZipLookupAction!input.action.
By taking action you will join AARP's online network and will receive urgent news and action alerts about the issues that matter the most to older Americans, as well as information about AARP activities, events, and member benefits.
