Tell Your City Councilor You Support Safe Streets

At AARP, we are working with city leaders across the country and right here in New Mexico to make communities more livable so people can age in place and have access to certain services and amenities no matter how old they are.

Central to the creation of livable communities is the possibility for everyone, regardless of age or ability, to travel safely. And that is why AARP New Mexico is supporting the Complete Streets Ordinance being proposed by Albuquerque City Councilor Isaac Benton.

The ordinance is a commitment by the city to look at road creation and improvements beyond just motor vehicles but to incorporate safety measures as well as access by other groups such as pedestrians and cyclists.

Currently Albuquerque ranks 17th as the most dangerous metropolitan area for pedestrians in the United States. New Mexico is ranked seventh. In 2018, 36 pedestrians were killed in Albuquerque by motorists. That is a 32 percent increase in pedestrian fatalities from 2017 when 22 pedestrians were killed in Albuquerque.

That is why we need ordinances like Complete Streets that require city leaders take to take a hard look at making our streets safer for all users.

Ask your city councilor to vote yes for safer, user-friendly streets. Now is the time to reduce all traffic fatalities.

Dear [Decision Maker],

Currently Albuquerque ranks 17th as the most dangerous metropolitan area for pedestrians in the United States. New Mexico is ranked seventh. In 2018, 36 pedestrians were killed in Albuquerque by motorists. That is a 32 percent increase in pedestrian fatalities from 2017 when 22 pedestrians were killed in Albuquerque.

That is why I am joining AARP New Mexico in supporting Councilor Isaac Benton's Complete Street Ordinance.

So please vote yes on Complete Streets and yes to safer transportation options for all Albuquerque residents.

Sincerely,
