Protect the health and rights of nursing home residents

In Oregon, nursing home residents or staff account for nearly 60 percent of all Covid-19 deaths.

Oregon must hold nursing homes and other long-term care facilities accountable when residents suffer harm, neglect, and even death. The legislature must protect the health and rights of residents and their families to seek justice.

Tell legislators: Reject any proposal that allows nursing home companies to avoid legal accountability related to COVID-19. Uphold the health and rights of nursing home residents and their families during the pandemic.

Protect the health and legal rights of nursing home residents

Dear [Decision Maker],

I urge you to reject proposals to grant legal immunity related to COVID-19 for nursing homes, assisted living facilities, and other long-term care facilities.

The death toll in nursing homes is horrific. The last thing residents and their families need is to be stripped of their ability to hold facilities legally accountable when residents suffer harm, neglect, and even death.

While the coronavirus itself is not the fault of facilities, long-term care companies must remain responsible for negligent actions. And right now, with in-person visits and inspections limited, there is less oversight and attention to what is happening in facilities. Now more than ever, residents and their families must have access to the legal system to seek justice.

I'm looking to you for swift action to protect the health and safety of our loved ones living in nursing homes -- not to limit accountability of residential care facilities. Please, reject any proposal that would grant nursing homes, assisted living, and other long-term care facilities legal immunity related to COVID-19.

Sincerely,
