Nearly 800,000 Missourians care for older parents, spouses or other loved ones, helping them to live independently at home. These family caregivers have a huge responsibility, and on August 28, 2018, a new law took effect that will make life a little bit easier for them.

The CARE (Caregiver, Advise, Record and Enable) Act helps family caregivers when their loved ones go into the hospital and as they transition home. It requires hospitals to:

  1. Designate: The family caregiver’s name is recorded when a loved one is admitted to a hospital
  2. Inform: The family caregiver is notified if the loved one is to be discharged to another facility or back home
  3. Instruct:  At discharge, the family caregiver is provided with instructions of the medical and nursing tasks—like wound care or injections—that they must perform for their loved one at home.

AARP Missouri fought to make the CARE Act a reality, because supporting caregivers is a top priority for all of us.
